Most off-road caravans are sold as a starting point. You pick a base model, then you start ticking boxes — a better battery here, a bigger fridge there, an aftermarket awning because the standard one wasn't quite right. By the time the order sheet is done, you've spent months second-guessing combinations, and you still can't be entirely sure they all work well together.

The Yellow Chassis Edition exists because we got tired of watching customers do that.

Instead of handing over an options list, we built the caravan we'd spec for ourselves if money and time weren't a factor — every system chosen to work with every other system, nothing left half-finished, nothing added just because it looks good on a brochure. It's available across the CX3, CX4 and CX6 range, starting from R949,950, with more than R300,000 of accessories built in as standard. No further shopping required.

Here's what actually sets it apart.

A chassis that looks the part because it's built for the part

The name isn't decorative. Every Yellow Chassis unit rides on a galvanised, yellow powder-coated ladder-frame chassis with a 2.5-ton solid beam braked axle, leaf springs on 16mm u-bolts, and Monroe heavy-duty shocks — the same fundamentals we've always argued are the right ones for South African off-road conditions, not the compromise. Three levelling jacks and underbody stone protectors come standard, because a caravan that can't sit level and survive a gravel road isn't an off-road caravan.

The body panels are real carbon fibre, not fibreglass with a badge — roughly three times the strength, for meaningfully less weight over the axle.

Off-grid for as long as you want to be

This is the part that quietly does the most work. A 3000VA Victron Multiplus inverter, a 314Ah lithium battery, 2×250W roof solar plus a 400W foldable panel, and a Victron Cerbo GX monitor to actually keep track of it all — this isn't a system sized to run lights and charge a phone. It's sized to run a National Luna 90L fridge-freezer, a second 30L drawer fridge, a microwave or airfryer, a 9000BTU aircon, and a 14L gas/electric geyser, all at once, for days, without needing a campsite power point.

Pair that with a 150L primary water tank, a second 60L tank, and a 5-stage water filtration system, and the honest answer to "how long can we stay out here" stops being a compromise question.

A bathroom that doesn't feel like an afterthought

Full internal bathroom — toilet, shower, and basin — built into a patent-protected space behind the pull-out kitchen, with a retractable roof for an open-air shower when you'd rather not use the enclosed one. It's a small detail that says a lot about the philosophy behind this edition: comfort isn't rationed out as an upgrade, it's just part of the caravan.

Built for people who'd rather arrive than assemble

Sand ladders, a 270° batwing awning with side panels and a stone guard housed in a solid aluminium box, underbody lighting, a biometric safe, a U-braai mounted in the nosebox — these are the things people normally buy separately, months apart, after finding out the hard way what they were missing. On the Yellow Chassis Edition, they're already there when you collect the keys.

Who it's actually for

Not everyone needs this. If you're happy building up your kit over a few seasons, the standard range still gives you a properly engineered platform to start from. The Yellow Chassis Edition is for the buyer who already knows what a serious build looks like, doesn't want to manage twenty separate purchase decisions to get there, and would rather spend the next few years using the caravan than upgrading it.
